Toner or hydrolate? How to choose a toner or hydrolate for your skin?

Toner or hydrolate

Toners and hydrolates are not only essential for restoring the right pH level of the skin, but they are also a great addition to the skincare routine. What is the difference between a toner and a hydrolate? Which products are suitable for your skin type?

Why do we need a toner? Toner and hydrolate – differences

For a well-cared-for and healthy complexion, we need to keep an eye out on our skin’s natural, slightly acidic pH, which is around 4.5-5.5. This pH increases when we cleanse our skin, especially with soap (it can be as high as 9!). The more alkaline the product is and the more often we use it, the more the skin is exposed to disturbances of the microbiome and the hydrolipidic layer of the skin. An alkaline environment is a good breeding ground for bacteria and we should avoid it.

Toner

Toners and hydrolats restore the skin’s pH. What is the difference between a toner and a hydrolate? Toner is a ready-made, usually at least several-ingredient product to tone the skin. Hydrolate is a natural floral water, which is a by-product of distillation of essential oils. Such water contains many substances valuable to the skin and traces of essential oils, it also has a low pH, and therefore it helps balance the pH of the skin. Hydrolats can also be one of the ingredients of a ready-made toner. Note: Toners and hydrolats are not suitable for cleansing the skin!
